A friend of mine recently was talking about introducing kids to older musicians and bands, like the Beatles. I loved older music growing up, some of my favorites were the Beach Boys, Jim Croce, Frank Sinatra and even Bobby Darin. So I switched the radio station a week or two ago to listen to some 60's and 70's music (Plus I was getting tired of hearing the same 5 songs on repeat). One day while we were driving Oliver said to me:
“Are all these people sing about is love
songs?”
We had just heard “love potion #9” & “I’ll have to say I love you in
a song” by Jim Croce. I thought this was a funny but very true question.
For Oliver's 10th Birthday we told him we'd take him on a special decade trip to celebrate. He was given a list of destination options, mostly destinations we had family or friends to stay with to keep the cost within our budget. He really wanted to go to Harry Potter World, but unfortunately that was too expensive and not on the list. So he chose to go to Washington state to visit with my cousin Kj and her 11 year old son O. He also got to choose if it would be a family trip or if he wanted to travel with just one parental unit. He chose to travel with his Marmee.
He's been excited about it for a few months and the date finally arrived for us to travel. Friday June 29th, 2018 we set off for the airport around 1pm. Our plane would leave Minneapolis at 2:45pm our time and arrive in Seattle, WA at 4:40pm PST.
My Cousin Kelli kindly picked us up from the airport and we went out to eat. We had Tacos for dinner and Molly Moon's ice cream for dessert. It was super yummy. Then we went back to her house in Redmond for the evening. She sells Lularoe clothes from her home and Oliver did a little shopping there. We stayed the night and in the morning Oliver made pancakes for everyone. He also got to go live on Facebook to show people 10 lularoe outfits he put together from Kelli's store.
We stayed back at Kelli's while they went to a birthday party because Oliver had only slept like 4 hours that first night with all the excitement and the time change. In the late afternoon we all drove up to my other cousin Kj's house in Bellingham, WA to stay with her for the rest of the week.
Sunday we went to Blaine to ride an old walk-on ferry out to Semiahmoo Spit. It was low tide so we could go out to look for sand dollars. Oliver was unsure at first of walking in the muck but he quickly joined right in and had a lot of fun!
Monday was more of a chill day. We played a new Harry Potter board game with my cousin and her son O. Oliver really enjoyed that and we played it multiple times during our week long stay. Monday evening I was able to hang out with Kelli and two littles, while Kj and Oliver had a little date night. I'm so lucky to have amazing family!
Tuesday was Oliver's official half birthday, July 3rd. Kj drove us across the Canadian Border to the north side of Vancouver to the Capilano Suspension bridge and treetop adventure. After walking around there for a while we made one stop in Vancouver to Casa Gelato to find a few out of their 240 different flavors to try. Oliver found all the pink flavors for his cone so we could take a pink photo in front of their pink wall. We made it back in time to get my cousin's son to his baseball game and have time enough for another game of Harry Potter.
Wednesday my cousin took us to Lake Padden near their house to go swimming and try paddle boarding for the very first time. Oliver stood right up on the kid paddle board and off he went. As the day went on he just got more confident on it and told my cousin "I think I finally found a sport I really love!". That evening we watched the fireworks from the back porch landing. It was quite beautiful over the bay.
Thursday Oliver went into downtown Bellingham to walk around and do a little shopping. My cousin walked us into Fairhaven to shop a little and then just Oliver & I rode the bus to downtown. Bellingham is a big community but the downtown feels small and homey. I love it. Oliver found some cool new socks to buy and we got a pair for Lucius and Daddy too. In the evening we played one last board game of Harry Potter (Oliver super enjoyed this game). Then when Grannie Annie came back from the baseball game she drove us to her house in Everett. (The plan was to take the train into Seattle in the morning from Bellingham but it was all sold out when I looked for tickets.) We stayed overnight with Grannie Annie and then woke up early Friday morning.
Friday we took the sounder train into Seattle from Everett. We got into the city around 8:15am. We took the link train up to the Monorail station. Then took the Monorail to the Space Needle. We of course had to tote all of our luggage around with us the whole day but thankfully there were bag checks at the Space Needle and later the Museum. We went to the top of the Space Needle cause it was something Oliver had started talking about right before our trip. Once at the top he was not happy. He expected there to be railings instead of glass. The all glass walls really freaked him out. So we didn't stay too long at the top and went down to the gift shop to look around. Then we went to the Chihuly Glass Museum because that was something I really wanted to see as long as we were right there. Oliver tolerated it and tried to enjoy it for my sake. Then we went to get pizza for lunch, found a cool playground to climb on for a bit, and he bought himself a snow cone to eat in front of a super cool building. We rode the Monorail back to the Westlake Link station, jumped on the link to the airport, went through security pretty fast and sat at our gate of a few hours before heading home.
All in all a really wonderful trip to connect with Oliver one on one. I will treasure the memories both good and bad that we enjoyed during our time together. I made a 10 minute video of our trip. Its not every detail but tells the story pretty well. Enjoy!
Our third week of Summer we had swimming lessons in the afternoons till Thursday. That was the day we found out that both boys did not pass this level but were very close. I'm sure they'll be ready for the next level if they keep practicing all their new skills.
One day we had no water for most of the day so we tried to go places that did have toilets we could use. The boys asked to go to Tamarack Nature Center, so away we went. The neighbors have been trying to go to one park a week with us, so they joined us because they too did not have water (the sewer on our block was being worked on that day. The four boys all had a blast and I think we were there for a couple of hours.
That same night we went to the Rosefest parade like we've done for the past several years. The boys enjoy scooping up the candy that people throw.
Oliver's been helping cook dinners with Jerimy more and more this summer. He loves seeing how his food is made and learning tricks from his dad. He has a cooking camp coming up the end of July he is very much looking forward to.
We went to the library to see a juggling unicyclist one evening. That was fun.
After seeing the unicyclists at the parade and the juggling show, Lucius was really excited to try his unicycle again. He is getting close but not quite there yet.
We didn't do a lot this week but it was fun to watch the boys learn all their new skills at swimming lessons and have a more relaxed week of playing outside.
