Cursive...

One evening Oliver opened up to me about all the things he dislikes about school. I was seriously sadden (and frustrated) to hear my almost 8 year old tell me that it was "mostly cause I'm not learning anything new, except maybe in Math and Science".

I asked him what he wanted to learn. He mentioned cursive and multiplying. We'd just talked about cursive being a fancy way to write stuff because I saw this piece of school work that had come home.

He thought it'd be fun to see what cursive was and try to learn it. So he stayed home one Friday and worked on learning the two things he wanted to learn about. Of course he did get a bit frustrated with the cursive at one point and told me "i'm not learning anything, i'm just writing. Writing isn't learning". Oh boy. But then he started getting it (being left handed he was having trouble starting the letters in the right places). He spent most of the day trying it and he quickly mastered his own name and a few other words. It went a lot better when he traced my copy and then he'd try it on his own.

Then he wanted to do some multiplying. He said he already knew how to do it. I wasn't sure if they've started teaching that in school yet or not, but I was surprised when he knew most of his times tables (1-5 and 10 times tables). WOW. He was giggling and telling me I couldn't stump him. He even wanted to figure out a few of his own math problems he thought up: like a googleplex times a googleplex.

After Lunch he and I took a trip to the bookstore to see if we could find a cursive book and a multiplication workbook. We found a few and he picked out which ones he thought looked best. We spent a bit of time in the children's book section too. When we got home he spent even more time working in his cursive writing book and reading. We even did a times table chart thingy together.

I'm surprised by how much he already knows. I love that he loves to learn new things and be challenged. I just hope I'm able to work with his teacher to help bring that same passion for learning into his classroom.

Simple Pleasures: Lazziness contest

This apparently is a "laziness contest" in progress. (Jerimy finally figured out the contest came from the Garfield comic strips that Oliver loves to read so much). Too funny.

Which soon turned into a tickle fight.

I love that they get along so well (most of the time).

This is another laziness contest that happen a different day.

Death...

Just before Halloween my Great Aunt died. I didn't really tell the kids too much about it, one because they were asleep when I found out and two, they didn't know her very well.

On Saturday November 21st they held a memorial service for her. We attended, with the boys, and they sat in the pew listening. Well Oliver was listening to the service and singing the hymns. Lucius was reading the books we happened to bring with us and playing a little with his cousins who sat in the pew next to us.

I handed him the program and the card that had her eulogy on it. He read them all and then part way through the service he looked up at me. With a sad and very shocked look on his face my almost 8 year old asked me "did she... Did her mom really kill her?" as he pointed to the eulogy words "proceeded in death by her mother". He was terrified it had happened that way until I was able to explain the word 'proceeded' meant. Wow- that would be quite shocking to think that. Poor kid, thankfully we got it cleared up and he felt a lot better.

After the memorial service we stayed to visit and eat. The boys got their first taste of church lady jello salads and piles of desserts.

Operation Christmas Child...

This year was the fourth year Mormor has taken Oliver, Lucius and her other grandchildren out shopping to fill shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The shoe boxes get collected and then sent around the world to children who don't usually get Christmas presents. The boys love having a little one on one time with Mormor and Morfar as they shop for little things to fill their box.

Then this past Saturday we all gathered at KTIS and dropped off all 7 shoe boxes (one for each local grandkid).

We enjoyed a little hot cocoa inside and took a photo with Pam and Andy (On-Air Radio personalities). It's a fun tradition and I love helping to teach the boys to think of others who don't have all that we have.

Simple Pleasures: darkness...

Since Day Light Saving it's been getting dark at like 5pm. The Little Misters think it's kind of exciting. One night it wasn't even 6pm and it was so dark I figured there was plenty of time to get a light saber fight in before bedtime.

A Little Baby...

I started watching a three month old baby the beginning of November. She's a pretty easy baby, lots of sleeping and snuggles. Lucius is a complete sweetheart toward little kids and babies. He loves watching them, holding them and helping them. It's been fun to see both boys come talk and play with the baby (on the days I have her) in the mornings before school.

Leaf piles...

We have loved having the beautiful weather this November. We had lots of time to play in the leaf piles we made every week before cleaning up the yard. This is three or four weeks of leaf pile photos.
